Barrack Obama - An American Story by Bob Carlton & Ariele Gentiles – Zondervan

I must confess that I got sick and tired of the media hype over Barrack Obama and the assumption that he would be a good president, even before he had attempted the job. As a result I read little about him. This book may be the answer.
A short book, the author looks at the inspirational story of his rise to the height of American politics from very humble beginnings. It looks at the inspiration he got from Martin Luther King and how this and his faith drove him forward. I confess that I found this book very readable and I think you will too.

Rousing the Warriors by Steve Uppal – New Wine Press

This book is a clarion call to Christians everywhere to stand up and be counted. He addresses the many things that discourage Christians and cause them to lose heart. He calls us again to be warriors for Christ. This book comes out of the charismatic ‘stable’ and hence there may be some things with which you disagree, yet it is a stirring book with many points to recommend it.

The Book of God by Walter Wangerin – Lion

Now here’s an interesting book. The author has taken the Biblical story and presents it in the format of a novel. He has removed repetition and genealogy and inserted historical and imaginary context. The result is a very readable story where much of the Bible has been preserved. I dipped into it and found it quite refreshing, but all such books must come with a warning. I distrust paraphrases because they purport to be translations, but often distort the Word of God. This book goes further and embellishes the story. Yet maybe it has a place. It is easy and interesting to read.
I was puzzled that although the cover has Eve with a serpent round her waist and an apple in her hand, the author starts the book at Abraham, omitting the creation story. But I found it spoken by Ezra after the exile. Overall, I reserve judgement on this book, though it will be a fascinating read. But it is no substitute for your Bible.
