TC Book Reviews - July 2006

Here are several titles which tackle the issues raised in "The Da Vinci Code"

The books are quite different in style and price, so there should be one to suit most people who are inclined to look into this subject.   Here is the list, starting with the cheapest:

"THE DA VINCE CODE, a response" by Nicky Gumbel, 99p.
Straight forward, concise responses to the claims and questions raised.

"THE DA VINCE CODE - from Dan Brown's Fiction to Mary Magdalene's Faith" by Gary Williams. £1.99
A tutor at Oak Hill College, Gary Williams answers seven of the key claims raised by the book.

"IS IT WORTH BELIEVING? - The spiritual Challenge of the Da Vinci Code" by Greg Clarke £7.00.
A different approach which looks at how we come to believe one thing rather than another.   This one seems to have a broader application as well.

"A QUEST FOR ANSWERS - "THE DA VINCE CODE" by Josh McDowell, £5.99.
Presented in a 'narrative' style (at least, I think that's what you'd call it!).   'Drawing on the mountains of historical evidence McDowell skilfully separates fact from fallacy and presents unassailable truths that readers can depend on.'

"CRACKING DA VINCE'S CODE" by James Garlow & Peter Jones, £6.99.
This is one of the first 'response' books (pub 2004), and also contains a Readers Discussion Guide.

"THE BOOKS THE CHURCH SUPPRESSED - Fiction and Truth in The Da Vinci Code" by Dr Michael Green £7.99.
'The Da Vinci Code' argues that the church has suppressed the truth.   Michael Green goes back to the original sources to check these assertions.

As a contrast to the above books, here is one about the inside workings of Saddam's regime.

"SADDAMS SECRETS" how an Iraqi General defied and survived Saddam Hussein, by Iraqi General Georges Sada. £7.99
The author was one of Saddam's top generals and foremost military advisors.   A truth-teller in a government that made the truth dangerous.   A devout Christian in a Muslim country.   This looks a fascinating read, and will probably appeal to men.
